Classic Norway: A romantic getaway

to the Art Nouveau town Ålesund, Geiranger, Trollstigen & the Atlantic Road

Classic Norway – small hotels in big surroundings! The hotel chain has some of Norway’s most charming hotels and traditional rorbu accommodation. Bring your significant other to three of them and experience the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, beautiful Geiranger and two National Tourist Routes – Trollstigen and the Atlantic Road.

Ålesund– Hotel Utsikten Geiranger, 108 km, 2 ferries, 3 h 35 min

The trip starts in Ålesund. Take the time to experience this town before driving to Geiranger. Visit the Art Nouveau Centre and the Kube art gallery, climb the steps to the top of Mount Aksla to enjoy the view, and enjoy a good lunch before hitting the road.  The Geirangerfjord is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is often described as ‘the pearl of the Norwegian fjords’. With its high waterfalls and abandoned mountain farms, it is considered the gem among the many beautiful Norwegian fjords. If you drive via Hellesylt, you can catch a fjord cruise en route! At Geiranger, check into Hotell Utsikten Geiranger, near the viewpoint at Flydalsjuvet with its impeccable view of the Geirangerfjord. The hotel is from 1893, and the restaurant has a small à la carte menu based on local produce and seasonal ingredients.  If you have time, we recommend an excursion to Skageflå mountain farm. This trip starts by boat from Geiranger, before you jump ashore and walk up to the farm. From here, there are magnificent views of the fjord and the Seven Sisters waterfall. The perfect spot for a romantic picnic!

 Geiranger – Trollstigen – Angvik Gamle Handelssted, 190 km, 1 ferry, 4 h

The trip to the next hotel goes via Valldal over the Trollstigen Road (normally opens in the second half of May; check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration) – one of the most spectacular stretches of road in Norway. Include a stop at the top of Trollstigen and enjoy the view from one of the many viewpoints. There is also a café and souvenir shop.  Please note: Google Maps (link below the map) sets out the route from Geiranger to Trollstigen via Åndalsnes, and not via Valldal. However, during the summer months, the RV63 road/Trollstigen is open, so you can drive from Geiranger via Valldal to Trollstigen and then continue down to Åndalsnes. The next night is spent at Angvik Gamle Handelsted. The hotel is a little gem on the Tingvollfjord. Unwind at Badehuset Spa before enjoying a delicious dinner. The restaurant’s philosophy is to use as much as possible of what nature has to offer.  Tip: ask for the romantic welcome package when you book!

Angvik – the Atlantic Road – Håholmen Havstuer, 114 km, 1 h 55 min

Angvik Gamle Handelsted has boats and bikes that guests can use free of charge. How about a little excursion before continuing to your next destination?  The trip continues towards the Atlantic Road. We recommend driving via Bud, a lively and charming fishing village, where you can eat lunch and visit Ergan Coastal Fort. From Bud, you head to the world famous part of the Atlantic Road. Known as ‘the Road in the Ocean’, the road winds its way across seven bridges like a serpent to Kårvåg on Averøya. Stop at Eldhusøya, where you will find a café, a scenic path and a lovely walk around the island.  The listed fishing village Håholmen near Kårvåg has served as a meeting place, harbour, home and workplace for fishermen, seamen, traders and travellers for centuries. The Viking ship Kvitserk carries guests across to the fishing village and Håholmen Havstuer, where you spend the night. Don’t miss the chance to taste the signature dish clipfish, go on an eagle safari, rent a kayak or a rowing boat and fishing equipment, and, not least, enjoy the peace and atmosphere of authentic historical surroundings. The rooms at Håholmen are unique, since they are distributed among several small, charming and intimate buildings – many from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Håholmen – Ålesund, 132 km, 1 ferry, 2 h 50 min

The final leg of the trip takes you back to Ålesund. Alternatively, you can end the trip in Molde, which has many flight connections.
